WebRTC Server Calculator

A rough estimate of the WebRTC infrastructure a cam platform needs: outbound bandwidth and media servers for your number of concurrent broadcasts, viewers and video quality.

—Total outbound WebRTC bandwidth
—Estimated number of media servers

This estimate assumes a 1 Gbit/s port per media server minus ~30% headroom, i.e. about 700 Mbps of sustained outbound capacity. The exact configuration depends on viewer geo-distribution and fault-tolerance requirements — refined during the consultation.

Media server licences: Wowza vs Krona.Chat

Krona.Chat on the Janus media server (open source)$0
Licence savings per month—
Licence savings per year—

Wowza Streaming Engine, Basic Monthly plan: $195 a month per instance (one server) with up to 10 transcoded channels; each extra channel is $25. This is a minimum estimate: no charges for channels above the limit and no custom Enterprise discounts. Wowza prices as of October 2026: wowza.com

How WebRTC server load is estimated

Every webcam model broadcast is a live WebRTC stream: the model’s browser sends video to a media server (an SFU; in Krona.Chat, the open-source Janus server), and the media server forwards it to each viewer separately. That’s why outbound traffic grows as broadcasts × viewers × bitrate.

WebRTC keeps latency under a second — which matters for private shows, chat and tips in real time — but needs more outbound bandwidth than HLS broadcasting. The calculator shows the order of magnitude: how many WebRTC media servers with a 1 Gbit/s port your load requires.

What do WebRTC media server licences cost? Commercial media servers are licensed per server: Wowza Streaming Engine, for example, costs $195 a month per instance. Janus is a free, open-source media server, so on Krona.Chat media server licences cost $0 however many servers you run — and the savings grow with your infrastructure.

The exact configuration — geo load balancing of WebRTC streams across Janus servers, backup servers, the database cluster and storage — we size for your project.
